Q is for Quick

The quickest spreading type of malware is a worm. You may be astounde at how quickly they can spread. The worms Melissa, Sobig, I-love-you, Sasser and My-doom have, in each case, infected an unwary world with astonishing speed. So far, My-doom has been the quickest to spread around the world which, at it’s peak, was responsible for 1 out of every 12 email messages. That was in 2004. Since then security firms have invested much in researching how worms spread in order to prevent such a rapid infection ever happening again. Worms spread so quickly that normal ‘signature based’ anti-virus software is powerless to stop it. Signature based anti-virus software only scans for viruses and worms it knows about through its database. Even if the signature database could be updated hourly this is still way too slow to catch a rapidly spreading worm. A recent study, sponsored by Cisco Systems, of how quickly a worm can spread concluded that it is possible for a worm to spread at the rate of just under 1 million per second. That’s really, really quick.

If a worm can spread that quickly how can you keep your PC safe? Well, you could use Kaspersky Internet Suite. With its new ‘on-going behaviour analysis’ it is possible to catch new viruses and worms as soon as they hit. It does this by analysing what a piece of software is going to do, such as send itself to another computer. If it detects suspicious behaviour it can shut down that process and report to you that it has found a suspicious package.
