O is for Open Source
Open Source software such as Apache Web server, the Linux operating system and Firefox Web browser have always been thought of as more secure than other software products. Although this has always been open to debate what is clear is that there are vulnerabilities that have been found and exploited in both.
Microsoft products lead the headlines in terms of security and exploitation of vulnerabilities but this is may be because their products are used on nearly all PCs and so attract more attention from hackers and creators of malware rather than being less secure than other products.
It is interesting to note that, in the U.S.A., the Department of Homeland Security has recently spent over $1,000,000 in hunting for security bugs in open-source. Alan Cox, a very respected figure in the open-source world, speaking at the Linux World conference in London warned of the dangers of thinking there are no vulnerabilities in open-source software. As a result, research into possible flaws in open-source software found – and fixed – more than 900 potential exploitations. You can imagine the headlines if this had been Microsoft products.
In view of the fact that operating systems such as Linux are not immune to exploitations or viruses if you are a Linux or other open-source user you should seriously consider using Kaspersky software for open-source.
