N is for Nigerian Scam

This scam, like many others, relies upon the gullibility and greed of human nature. In most cases an email arrives in your inbox that tells a long and sorry tale of personal woe and of vast amounts of money stuck in foreign investment banks and a request for your help in releasing this fortune in return for a share of the wealth. The ‘help’ you are asked to give is to allow all this money to be transferred to your bank account for a little while. The email goes on to say that this is the only way to recover the money locked in the foreign banks. As a reward for allowing your bank account to be used you are promised a share from all the money recovered. Of course, nothing of the kind happens. Instead, the bank account of the unwitting helper is raided for every penny.

There are many variations of this scam but the basic fraud is always the same; only the story varies. Never, ever reply to such emails. These originate from ruthless criminals and are not to be trusted in the least.

A good Spam filter such as iHateSpam will keep these scams out of your Inbox.
