H is for Hacking

Hacking refers to the activity whereby someone breaks in to a computer system using devious means. Frequently they use or modify existing software to gain access to other peoples computer systems. Exploiting bugs or loopholes in popular software, such as Internet Explorer, can give them an open door in to millions of PCs around the world.

Most hackers have some malicious intent motivating their activities although some do it just for the thrill or challenge of breaking in to a particular system. There are a growing number of so-called ‘ethical hackers’ who make it their business to point out flaws and loopholes in corporate security systems. In line with the increasing need for such ‘ethical hackers’ The University of Abertay in Dundee has launched a degree in ‘Ethical Hacking and Countermeasures’.

In the UK the Computer Misuse Act recently increased the jail term for hacking a computer from six-months to two years.
