F is for Firewall
You’ve heard about it lots of times and you know you should use one on your PC but just what exactly is a Firewall?
A firewall is a barrier between your PC and the Internet. Just like a physical firewall prevents a fire spreading from one area to the next a PC or network firewall stops any destructive software from spreading to your PC or helps to prevent hackers from gaining access to your PC. It can be a separate device through which your PC connects to the Internet or it can be a software program on your PC. The way it works is that it inspects the communication coming in and going out of your network or PC. Using a set of rules defined by the user the firewall will either allow the communication or block the communication. If you have a software firewall on your PC you may get messages from the firewall such as “The program xxx is trying to access the Internet. What do you want to do?” and you are given the options to deny this time, deny always, allow this time or allow always. In this way you define the rules that the firewall uses. Each time the firewall asks for your decision you should consider your response carefully because if you just allow everything it makes the firewall useless.
A good firewall is essential for any PC or network connected to the Internet to help keep your system safe from things like: Logic Bombs, Viruses, Trojans, Backdoor Remote Access, Email Bombs, Denial of Service and many more destructive or rogue processes.
